Brooklyn, NY - On Wednesday night, the men's basketball team traveled to Medgar Evers College to take on the Cougars in a conference matchup. Despite trailing the cougars going into the second half, the Hawks came back outscoring the Cougars in the final 20 minutes by 14 to win, 78-67. With the win, the Hawks move to 8-8, 3-3 CUNYAC while Medgar Evers drops to 6-10, 4-2 CUNYAC.
Assisted by Sophomore Guard Izzy Hoffman, Junior Guard John Akinyemi got the Hawks on the board first with a jumper. However, the Cougars would retain the lead for the better part of the half, allowing the Hawks to go ahead by two with 2:30 left to play, but then quickly retook the lead just 27 seconds later and headed into halftime with a three point cushion.
The Hawks dominated the second half on 48 percent shooting and connecting on three of six from behind the arc. A layup by Akinyemi tied the game at 46 and a Panagiotis Koutsoloukas bucket gave the Hawks the lead and never relinquished it. From that point, Medgar Evers fell behind by as much as ten, but clawed their way back to within one point with just over nine minutes left to play. The Hawks managed to hold on and outdistance themselves down the final minutes of the game to grab the 78-67 win.
Junior Guard Jeffrey Daza and Courtien both had a team high of 15 points. Sophomore Center Terry Carpenter had a team high of 10 rebounds to compliment his 13 points and Akinyemi finished the game with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, January 21 for a conference matchup when they play host to New York City College of Technology. The game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.
