Hawks Falter in Overtime

Box Score

Staten Island, NY – On Saturday, January 29, the men's basketball team played the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in a conference matchup at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center. After holding a lead for most of the game, a Dolphin three pointer with 22 seconds left knotted the score at 60 a piece to force overtime where the Hawks faltered and eventually lost 71-65. With the loss, the Hawks slip to 9-10, 4-4 CUNYAC while the Dolphins move to 14-4 and remain a perfect 9-0 in conference action.

The Dolphins kicked off the game with a Dale Taranto three pointer that sparked a 6-2 run, but the Hawks responded and took the lead at the 10:15 mark thanks to a Mark Courtein bucket from behind the arc, giving Hunter the 15-13 advantage. They would only extend it to as much as seven before CSI pulled back within one on Taranto jumper with less than a minute remaining making it a 22-21 game in favor of the Hawks as the half ended.

Still controlling the lead, the Hawks went up by as much as eight on two occasions in the second half, but the Dolphins kept charging back on the strength of 55.6 percent shooting from the field. With just under three minutes remaining, a jumper by Izzy Hoffman brought the lead back up to six, but it was quickly cut back to four on a layup by Jordan Young. With 38 seconds left, the Hawks held a three point advantage, but a Thomas Tibbs three pointer knotted the game at 60 a piece and with time winding down, neither team could get off a last second effort, forcing overtime.

As Hunter held the lead for the majority of the game, they slipped in the final 1:17 of overtime as they could not contain the Dolphins or connect on any shots, giving up six unanswered points and allowing CSI to go ahead and claim their ninth conference victory by a score of 71-65.

Courtein and Hoffman led the way for the Hawks as they scored 17 and 13 points a piece while Panagiotis Koutsoloukas and Anthony Uter each chipped in with 12. Jordan Young was the game's high scorer as he tallied 23 while teammate Bloochy Magliore added 19.

The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, February 2 when they host the Bloodhounds of John Jay in a conference match up at 7:00 pm.
