Staten Island, NY – On Saturday, January 29, the women's basketball team played the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in a conference matchup at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center. In a low scoring, defensive-ended game, the Hawks narrowly escaped a late Dolphin charge on free throws from freshman Kristen Markoe, holding on for a 49-47 win. With the victory, the Hawks advance to 7-12, 5-3 CUNYAC while CSI drops to 5-13, 3-6 CUNYAC.
The first half was a see-saw battle that featured five lead changes and five ties within the first five minutes. The Hawks broke away at the 7:34 mark when Markoe made a layup to go up by nine, but the Dolphins responded with eight unanswered points, capping the run with a Katelyn Hepworth three pointer to close the gap to one heading into halftime.
It was a different scenario in the second half as CSI took the early lead and held it until almost the end of the game, extending it to as much as nine with just over five minutes to play. At that points, Hunter's defense shut down the Dolphins and did not allow another point for the rest of the game and went on an 11-0 run to narrowly edge CSI by a score of 49-47.
Markoe was the game high scorer with 20 points. Teammate Nicole Lenard chipped in with 16 points and Johanna Keilwitz added nine. Allie Shanahan led the Dolphins with 19.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, February 2 when they host the Bloodhounds of John Jay in a conference match up at 5:00 pm.
