Men's Basketball Outlasts Beavers in Overtime

New York, NY- On Wednesday night, January 5, the men's basketball team traveled across town to take on conference rivals, CCNY in their third CUNYAC contest of the season. After being knotted at 59 by the end of regulation time, late free throw shots secured a 73-70 victory over the Beavers, advancing Hunter to 7-5, 2-1 CUNYAC while CCNY drops to 2-11, 0-3 CUNYAC.

Neither team got more than five points ahead of each other as the game was played evenly for the first half. 10 of the Hawks 26 points came off the hands of Maxwell Dubois as he contributed to the overall team shooting percentage of .314. Hunter's defense held the Beavers to just nine of 32 shooting from the field whiched helped them hold a five point edge heading into halftime.

While in control of the second half for the majority of the 20 minutes, building up a lead of nine and eight on two occasions, CCNY fought back hard to tie the game twice and even take a short lived lead within the last five minutes. Hunter, holding a one point lead with 2:56 to go, went up by two on a made free throw from Dubois with 23 seconds remaining. However, it was answered with a made free throw shot from Vincent Roberts to cut the lead back to one. Jason Cole answered with successful attempts from the charity stripe putting the Hawks up by three with just 10 seconds left. A successful converted three point play by Kenny Rubenstein tied the game with four seconds left, forcing overtime.

The Hawks again built up a seven point lead within the first two minutes, but CCNY continued to fight to stay in the game, making it a one point game with 23 seconds remaining. Back to back free throw shots by Cole and Mark Courtein secured a three point lead and the win as time ran out.

Dubois was the game high scorer with 26 points while teammates Cole and Courtein chipped in with 12 and 14 respectively.

The Hawks are back in action on Friday, January 7 when they take on their rivals, the Bearcats of Baruch in the Battle of Lexington. The conference matchup is scheduled for a 5:30 pm start.
