FLUSHING, NY - The Hunter College women's tennis team earned its 12th consecutive championship this afternoon, defeating Brooklyn College, 5-1 in the 2011 CUNY Athletic Conference / Hospital for Special Surgery Women's Tennis Championship at the USTA National Tennis Center. With the championship victory, the Hawks have earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship in May 2012.
Today's victory was especially sweet for the Hawks, considering the fact that Hunter's lone loss in the regular season was dealt by Brooklyn College. Senior standout Jennifer Kraham was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, marking the second consecutive year she has received that honor.
Jane Selegean and Gina Yeo got the ball rolling for Hunter as the pair knocked off Maria Sanz and Norma Chabbott, 8-2 to in flight #2. Brooklyn battled back however, winning flight #3 as Janice Shen and Gianna Gelosi combined to overpower Hawk duo Stephanie Ahwireng and Caroline Kaleda, 8-3. But MVP Kraham and Flavia Guidi fought back and earned the second doubles win for the Hawks, taking flight #1 as they defeated Bulldogs Yuliya Orkis and Liana Rivkin, 8-2.
Singles provided more of the same, as the Hawks continued their winnings ways. Guidi finished first in flight #3, edging Shen, 6-0 and 6-1 to earn the win. Yeo followed up shortly thereafter, defeating Diana Rafailova, 6-1 and 6-0 in flight #5 before Kraham sealed the deal with a win over Rivkin (6-1, 6-1) in flight #2.
The Hawks concluded the fall season with a 10-3 record while the Bulldogs went 14-3. Hunter returns to the courts next April and will represent the CUNY Athletic Conference next May in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship.
