STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Hunter College women's tennis team dominated singles play and got a critical win in doubles competition to hang on and defeat the College of Staten Island, 5-4 and remain unbeaten at the CSI Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The win improves Hunter's record to 5-0, both overall and in the CUNY Athletic Conference while CSI drops to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the CUNYAC.
In doubles,
Jennifer Kraham and
Stephanie Ahwireng teamed up to defeat Alena Vedeneeva and Ilona Stoyko, 8-6 but CSI charged back winning the next two matches. Sophia Varriano and Maryna Incherchera beat
Gina Yeo and
Caroline Kaleda (8-1) before Katie Masterson and Jean Baak got a similar result against Danielle Weitzman and
Arielle Zieff, downing the Hawks 8-3 to take a 2-1 lead.
In singles play, Kraham dominated the first flight, defeating Varriano in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Dolphins led following flight two as Stoyko defeated Ahwireng (7-5, 6-2) but Hunter would even things up in the third flight when Yeo beat Baak (6-4, 6-0) and then Kaleda defeated Avevor (6-2, 6-0).
CSI's Incherchera defeated Weitzman (6-2, 6-1) in the fifth flight to tie the match heading into No. 6.
Lumi Chan won the first set against Masterson 6-3 before dropping the second, 3-6. She would battle back from a 6-5 deficit in the third set to win, 10-8, giving Hunter the 5-4 victory.
The Hawks return to the courts, Thursday, October 6
th when they travel to Brooklyn College to take on the Bulldogs at 4pm.
