Hawks Fall to Centenary in Championship Game, 72-61

NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter College women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 72-61 loss against Centenary College in the 2011 Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Hunter College Sportsplex.

Kristen Markoe notched her second double-double of the tournament, finishing with 17 points and 10 boards en route to making her way onto the All-Tournament team while Megan McKenna added 16 points and six rebounds to earn a slot on the All-Tournament team as well. Nicole Lenard led the team shooting from behind the arc with three 3-pointers to finish the game with 13 points.

Despite leading by just a point (30-29) at the break, Centenary broke out quickly in the second half, establishing an early eight point lead against the Hawks, 37-29 at the 18:23 mark. The Hawks got key plays from McKenna, Lenard and Alease Vaughan to knot the game up at 39-all with 15 minutes left to play before establishing a six point lead of their own with 8:22 left to play.

The back and forth affair continued throughout the half however, the final swing of the game swayed in favor of the Cyclones who shot hot late in the game, going 15-30 from the field including five three pointers. With both teams tied at 61-61 with 3:02 left to play, the Cyclones went on a 5-0 run to make it a 66-61 affair with 2:26 remaining. Hunter attempted to foul in an effort to regain possession but the Cyclones went 6-6 from the charity stripe to account for today's final, 72-61.

The Hawks return to action this Tuesday, November 22nd when they host Wesleyan College at 6pm.
