NEW YORK, NY – The second-seeded Baruch Bearcats women's volleyball team upset the top-seed and knocked off the defending and regular season champion Hunter Hawks in the CUNYAC/Con Edison Championship final, 3-1 (14-25, 25-20, 23-25, 22-25) in an absolute nail biter this evening at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
Baruch gained momentum after winning the opening set 25-14 but the Hawks rallied in the second set, taking it 25-20 to even things up. The Bearcats prevailed in the back and forth third stanza, claiming the set by just two points as they edged the Hawks, 25-23. The momentum swayed in the fourth but ultimately the Bearcats prevailed, taking the set 25-22 to earn tonight's victory and earn the right to represen.
Christine Luebcke banged out 11 kills to lead the Hawks while Paulina Jobczyk added 10. Taylor Kordich managed seven kills while Mallory Grubler provided six kills. Katina Boutis led the squad with 33 assists.
Baruch held a slight advantage in kills, 51-48 but boasted the higher hitting percentage .252-.142.
