Basketball Puts Away CCNY

On Wednesday, February 9, the men's basketball team pushed its record over .500 with a tight win over the CCNY Beavers at the Hunter Sportsplex. The Hawks took control early in the game before falling behind by as much as seven in the second half. But behind a balanced scoring attack and tight defense, Hunter was able to regain the lead and claim the victory. With the win, the Hawks are now 12-11 (7-4 CUNYAC) while CCNY stands at 3-21 (1-11 CUNYAC).

Each of the Hawks' starting five scored in the early going, and the starting unit's defense was equally impressive in the early going as they held CCNY to just 2 points in the first 5 and a half minutes. A Jason Cole three pointer off Joel Cerda's pass gave the Hawks a 10-2 lead and forced CCNY into a time out with 14:23 on the clock. With 6:20 remaining, CCNY managed to tie the game at 23, but Hunter responded with a 7-0 run to regain control. The Hawks stretched the lead as high as 8 in the first half and they held a 39-35 lead at halftime.

This CCNY team played with tenacity as evident by their ability to push the Hawks to the brink in the second half. With 16:40 remaining in the half, the Beavers' Kenny Rubenstein got a steal off of a full court press and converted a layup to put his team ahead for the first time in the game at 44-42. CCNY would go up by seven in the final ten minutes of the half, but a three point play from Hunter's Panagiotas Koutsoloukas tied things up at 58 with 5:37 remaining.

                That play started the Hawks' final push. They then went on a 10-0 run, and lead by 7 after a tough layup in traffic by junior forward Anthony Uter with 1:32 remaining. From there, the Hawks were able to hit enough free throws to close out the win.

                Next up for the Hawks is a home game against Baruch at 7 PM on Friday, February 11 at the Hunter Sportsplex.
