Hoboken, NJ - On Sunday, February 20, the women's fencing team participated in the EWFC Team Championships held on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology. There were seven teams that competed over the daylong event. While the Hawk's sabre squad had an impressive day, winning each of their bouts, overall, as a team, they won two while dropping four which was good enough for a fifth place finish. After the conclusion of the championship, Hunter's record stands at 7-17.
The sabre squad, comprised of Jillian Melnick, Stella Shifrin and Hong Yuan were successful throughout the day as they didn't drop a single match and posted a perfect 6-0 record in that weapon. Melnick won an outstanding 17 out of 18 bouts while teammate Shifrin was equally impressive as was successful in 16.
Natalia Dittren, Lilly Cao and Irene Yenko made up the foil team and earned their only win in a tight 5-4 bout over the Rangers of Drew, contributing to the 22-5 team win. In the same match, the epee squad of Wendy Mak, Nina Hsu, and Samantha Li went a perfect 9-0 to notch their only win of the day.
The Hawks are back in action on Sunday, February 27 when they travel back to Hoboken, New Jersey to compete in the EWFC Individual Championships.
