Hawk Fencers Struggle at Eric Sollee Invitational

Boston, MA - On Sunday, February 6th, the women's fencing team travelled to Cambridge, MA to compete in the Eric Sorlee Invitational. The Hawks competed with top schools in the country such as MIT, Brown, Boston College, Harvard, Duke, and Brandies University. The all day event proved to be too much for the women as they posted a 0-6 record.

The Hawks match against host college MIT seemed to be the closet of the day as freshman Jillian Melnick won two of her bouts in the sabre event and senior Stella Shifrin was able to grab a win as well. But in the end the Engineers came out victorious. Against the Blue Devils of Duke University, the Hawks were overpowered as Shifrin was the only one who won a bout in the sabre event.

The women had a tight match with the Bears of Brown University, as they were able to win the sabre event. Shifrin won all three of her bouts and Melnick won two bouts. In epee, the Hawks were almost victorious as they won three bouts, but the Bears were able to walk away with the overall win. The Hawks then had a close match-up against rival Boston College. They were successful in winning the sabre event, as Shifrin and Melnick had wins in their bouts. The Eagles then overpowered the Hawks in foil and epee and was able to take the win.

In the fifth round, the women played the Judges of Brandeis. The Judges took foil and epee easily but only won sabre 6-3, with wins coming from Melnick and Shirfin. The final match was against Harvard University, where the Hawks also struggled. The women were victorious in the sabre event, but lost the foil and epee.

The Hawks are back in action on February 13th, where they play Yeshiva University at the Quad meet, hosted by CCNY. The match is set for a 9 a.m. start.
