NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College women's volleyball team opened CUNY Athletic Conference play by sweeping CCNY 25-17, 25-16, and 25-8.
The Hawks hit .306 for the match, led by Christine Luebcke with nine kills and Mallory Grubler with seven on .400 hitting. Katina Boutis tallied 20 assists in the first two sets as Mia Alexis De Claro added nine in the final set.
The teams battled back and forth to start the match until Kim Hirten took over service at 14-9. Her ace led a 5-point run which helped the Hawks to a 25-17 victory in the first set.
The second set followed a similar course as the first. With the score tied at 11, Camille Newkirk stepped behind the service line to start a 5-point run. After a kill by Boutis, Hirten led another 5-point run on the way to the 25-16 victory.
The Hawks raced to an early 10-4 lead in the final set, as De Claro continued service by leading a 6-point run to put Hunter ahead 18-6. Paulina Jobczyk followed, nailing two aces during her turn behind the service line. A Jaclyn Hadfield kill gave the Hawks a 23-7 lead, as Alisa Jaganjac followed with an ace to put Hunter at match point. One serve later, Luebcke drilled her final kill to win the match
Hunter (3-3, 1-0 CUNYAC) faces Baruch at 2:00pm for the second match of the day.
