Women's Volleyball Opens Season With 1-3 Start at Oneonta Tournament

The Hawks managed to top Hartwick for their sole victory

Oneonta, N.Y. - The women's volleyball team began their season at the Oneonta Invitational hosted by SUNY Oneonta. The two-day tournament allowed the Hawks to play two games on each day. On Friday, They took Emmanuel to four games, but fell 3-1 and then suffered a 3-0 defeat to the host institution. They salvaged a 3-0 win on day two against Hartwick, but then dropped a 3-0 decision to St. Lawrence to close out the tournament. The Hawks' record now stands at 1-3 on the season.

Against Emmanuel, the Hawks came out on the winning end of a 26-24 end of a game one outcome. However, the Saints dominated the next two games, 25-13 and 25-16 to go ahead 2-1. However, the fourth and final set was not an easy one as the Purple and Gold pushed their counterparts the whole way but eventually fell 27-25.

The second game of the day was against Oneonta. The Hawks would wind up falling in straight sets, 25-15, 25-20 and 25-11. Senior Kim Kirtin posted seven kills while Paulina Jobczyk and Lucia Stosic added four apiece. Setter Taylor Kordich was credited with 15 assists.

The Hawks shed some light on day two as they notched their first win of the season against Hartwick, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18. Stosic provided 10 of the team's 33 kills and led four of her teammates, each of who had at least five kills. The defensive end of the game was also on point with Karolina Krauze and Hirtin combining for 27 digs.

Closing out the tournament, the Purple and Gold fell to St. Lawrence in three close sets, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-22. Despite Hirtin, Stosic and Stephanie Taibe each posting seven kills, St. Lawrence turned to outside hitter Alexis Brown who did most of the damage, registering 17 kills. Kordich recorded a weekend high of 19 assists.
