Staten Island, N.Y. – The women's basketball team dropped their final regular season game last night to the Dolphins of The College of the Staten Island, 69-51. The game, which was supposed to be played home at the Hunter Sportsplex, was moved to CSI due to a maintenance issue. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 11-14, 9-7 CUNYAC while the Dolphins move to 15-10, 11-4.
The Hawks were led by
Ayanna Hudson, who scored the games only double-double with 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Kristen Sells chipped in with 12 points while
Nicole Lenard and
Dimitra Krissi Thomopoulos both added eight points apiece. The Dolphins were led by Melanie Johnson who scored 14 points while teammates Nikki Fabozzi and Olivia Tierno both netted 10.
Hunter fell behind early in the first half, as CSI went on a 21-3 run that would last seven minutes, giving them a 30-12. The Dolphins biggest lead came at half time as they were up 49-26 going in the locker rooms.
In the second half, CSI continued to lead by as many as 26 points, before Hunter was able to eventually knock the lead down to 18 by the close of the game. The Dolphins, who had shot 7-11 from three-point range in the first half, were just 1-7 from downtown in the second, as the Hawks held the Dolphins to just 20 second half points. Despite outscoring the Dolphins 25-20 in the second, the Hawks couldn't close the gap that was made in the first.
Hunter out-rebounded CSI, 41-37, but were plagued by 28 total turnovers.
The women play next in the Quarterfinals of the CUNYAC/Con Edison Tournament. They will play the No. 4 seed John Jay this Saturday at 4:00pm hosted by the Bloodhounds.
