Women's Basketball Lose in Overtime Thriller to Dolphins

New York, N.Y. - The Hunter Hawks women's basketball team lost an overtime thriller 80-77 to CUNY rival College of Staten Island Dolphins on Friday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Nicole Lenard hit a game tying 3-pointer as time expired to tie the game at 70 and send it into OT. In the extra frame, the game went back and forth. Lenard's layup with 1:11 to go tied the game at 75 but Dolphin's forward Katelyn Hepworth made a jumper with 0:59 remaining to take a 77-75 lead. Kerrin Sells missed a 3-pointer that would have given the Hawks the lead but the Dolphins corralled the rebound forcing Hunter to foul and the Dolphins made 3-of-4 free throws to seal the game.

Lenard led the Hawks (6-11, 3-5) scoring attack with 24 points and six assists. Kristen Markoe notched her 3rd double-double in the last four games with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Kristin Sells chipped in with 12 points and Krissi Thomopoulos had 10 points and 13 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end.

Melanie Johnson led all scorers with 32 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Hepworth chipped in with 18 points and nine rebounds for the Dolphins (13-3, 8-0).

The Hawks return to action Wednesday January 22nd when Baruch College comes to take on the Hawks at 5pm.
