BOX SCORE 3 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Hunter women's volleyball team traveled to Rowan University to participate in the Rowan University Invitational. The Hawks were slated to take on Centenary College, Kenyon College and Penn State Abington University.
The Hawks swept Centenary and Kenyon but lost a tough five set match to Penn State Abington.
Hunter 3 Centenary 0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-21)The Hawks opened up the Invitational playing Centenary College for the second time this season. They came out strong in the first set smashing 19 kills as a team. The Hawks fell behind early in the set trailing 12-6 but the team rallied and began attacking the net turning a 12-6 deficit to a 20-16 lead.
In the second set the Hawks took control early and never relinquished it, at one point holding a 20-9 lead. The Hawks tallied 16 kills during this set.
The third set started as a back and forth affair with each team trading points for the first nine points. Centenary held a six point advantage four different times in the set but the Hawks battled and regained focus outscoring their opponents 16-6 to close out a 25-21 victory.
Karolina Gajda led the team with 10 kills and a .364 hitting percentage while
Lucia Stosic and
Samantha Barrett each had nine kills, while hitting .571 and .467, respectively.
Paulina Jobczyk had eight kills and
Kristine Ciurcina once again tallied over 30 assists, dishing out 32 in this game.
Hunter 3 Kenyon 0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22)The Hawks faced a challenging opponent in Kenyon College during their second match of the day. The teams played evenly throughout the three set sweep by the Hawks with the score being tied 32 times during the three sets and having 16 lead changes.
The first set was back and forth with the teams exchanging points for the first 21 points. With the score tied 10-10, Kenyon rattled off five straight points, forcing the Hawks to call a timeout. After that, the team rallied to take an 18-16 lead thanks to kills by Barrett and CUNYAC Rookie of the Week
Julia Connolly. Kenyon battled to
tie the score again at 18-18 and 20-20 but the Hawks were able to show their resiliency to pull out the 25-22 win.
The second set was just as close as the first, but the Hawks were able to show their poise and earn a 25-23 win. During this set, no team was able to take a lead larger than four points.
In the third set, the teams once again went back and forth not allowing each other to take larger than a three point lead. Ultimately the Hawks were able to take advantage of their opponent's errors and timely kills and service aces.
Connolly led the team with 10 kills with a .400 hitting percentage, while Gajda chipped in with eight. Ciurcina dished out 21 assists.
Hunter 2 Penn State Abington 3 (17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13)The Hawks final match was a battle with both teams combining for nearly 100 kills.
The Hawks fought hard and attacked the net with Connolly leading the team with 17 kills, Barrett chipped in with 12 kills.
The Hawks now sit at 11-13 on the season. They return to action on Monday when they travel to CSI to take part in a CUNYAC Multi-Match where they will face Lehman College at 10am and Baruch College at 12pm.
