BOX SCORE MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Hunter women's volleyball team took on the Montclair St. Red Hawks Thursday night in a non-conference matchup. The Red Hawks downed the Hawks 3-2 in a hard fought five set match.
The Hawks dropped the first set 22-25 but battled back to take the second and third sets by a score of 25-22.
In the second set the Hawks fell behind 16-6 but battled back in the set twice, once to cut the lead to 16-10 and a second time after scoring eight straight points to take an 18-17 lead thanks to three kills by
Julia Connolly. The Hawks would close out the 25-22 set win thanks to a kill and service ace by Connolly.
The third set saw the Hawks get ahead early and continue to ride the momentum as they never trailed the entire set. The Hawks scored 12-of-25 points via kills.
The fourth was a close match with the Red Hawks getting ahead early in the set and despite some outstanding net play the Hawks couldn't catch up.
The fifth set was another close set with neither team being able to get larger than a two point lead. The Hawks were two points from victory after taking a13-12 lead but back-to-back Red Hawk kills and a service ace gave Montclair a 15-13 win.
The Hawks were outstanding at the net totaling 51 kills as a team. They were led by senior
Lucia Stosic who had a team-high 14 kills to go along with six block assists. Connolly was also excellent tallying 10 kills and 10 digs to go along with four block assists.
Karolina Gajda chipped in with eight kills and
Samantha Barrett and
Paulina Jobczyk each had six kills.
Kristine Ciurcina was excellent setting up her teammates totaling 33 assists. Libero
Luverie Lumbera had 21 digs.
The Hawks now sit at 8-12 on the season with the Hawks returning to action Tuesday October 7 when they welcome US Merchant Marine Academy to the Hunter Sportsplex. Game time is scheduled for 6:30pm.
