Women's Volleyball Wins 8th Straight; Secure #1 Seed For 2014 CUNYAC Tournament

BOX SCORE

NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter Hawks women's volleyball team swept the CSI Dolphins Tuesday night, securing the #1 seed in next week's CUNYAC Tournament. With the win, the Hawks finish the regular season undefeated in CUNYAC play for the first time since 2011 and undefeated at the Sportsplex for the first time since 2007.

The Hawks now sit at 19-13 on the season and finish 8-0 in CUNYAC play. They swept the Dolphins with scores of 25-7, 25-20, 25-10.

In the first set, the Hawks came out as the more aggressive team scoring their first three points on kills by CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Julia Connolly and Taylor Kordich. The Dolphins never threatened once the Hawks got rolling in all facets of their game. Kordich, Connolly, Karolina Gajda, Samantha Barrett and Lucia Stosic were all excellent attacking the net with each recording multiple kills in the set.

The second set started out much like the first set with the Hawks jumping on the Dolphins early taking a commanding 14-4 lead. The Dolphins responded to the challenge by cutting into the Hawk by scoring seven straight points. The Hawks answered the Dolphins run by getting back to their fundamentals and playing as a team to recapture the momentum to secure a 25-20 set win.

The third set started out as a back and forth affair for the first 17 points as the Hawks led 10-7. From that point forward the Hawks showed their mental toughness and began asserting their will outscoring the Dolphins 15-3 to secure a 25-10 victory.

Stosic led the Hawks with 10 kills and one block assist and Connolly tallied eight kills. Barrett and Kordich had seven and six kills respectively. Gajda chipped in with five kills and was the best server of the night totaling four aces. Kristine Ciurcina was able to keep the Dolphins guessing with her sets, totaling 29 assists.

The Hawks close out the regular season at this weekend's SUNY Oneonta Dig Pink Tournament. On Friday, the Hawks will play the hosts, SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College. On Saturday, they will face St. Lawrence University and Ithaca College.

The CUNYAC Tournament will begin Tuesday November 4, when the Hawks will host a Quarterfinal matchup against the #8 seed.
