QUEENS, NY - The Hunter women's tennis team lost 5-4 to the College of Staten Island, in the 2014 CUNYAC Championship on Wednesday evening. The match was halted at the beginning of the singles competition and moved from the USTA National Tennis Center to the Queens College Indoor Tennis Bubble.
The Hawks fell behind at the end of the doubles competition 2-1 dropping the #1 & #2 doubles flights with #3 pair of
Marie Visker &
Pauline McGlone winning their matchup 8-3.
With a delay of a little over an hour and a change of venue, the singles competition restarted from where they were suspended. The Dolphins put another point on the board when they took the victory in the #1 matchup, taking a 3-1 lead. The Hawks would respond winning the next three matches,
Janani Bavanandan won the #3 matchup 6-2, 6-0, next
Julia Vranas, in the match of the tournament, defeated Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), in the #2 matchup. The Hawks would pull even with a victory in the #6 matchup thanks to
Sara Beck's 6-1, 6-0.
The Dolphins would take the #4 matchup with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory. The clinching match was a great back and forth matchup between Michelle Kushnir and
Paulina Szegda. Szegda lost the first set 2-6, but then battled back to take the second set 6-2. The third set went to a tie breaker to decide the championship and Kushnir was able to come away with a 7-6 (7-1) victory, clinching the title for the Dolphins.
