BOX SCORE 4 ONEONTA, NY - The Hunter College women's volleyball team finished out regular season play this weekend at the SUNY Oneonta 'Dig Pink' Invitational. The Hawks played four tough opponents and finished 2-2 for the weekend.
The Hawks lost to the hosts, SUNY Oneonta in their first match on Friday afternoon. The five set match was thrilling, it saw the Hawks rally after dropping the first two sets. The team showed their determination and fight winning the third set, 25-22 and the fourth set 25-23. Ultimately, the Red Dragons, playing in front of their home fans, took the fifth set 15-10.
The Hawks got outstanding performances from
Samantha Barrett who led the team with 10 kills and one block assist.
Karolina Gajda had eight kills, two aces and one block assist while Angelica Aquino and
Lucia Stosic each had six kills, with Stosic adding in three solo blocks and five block assists.
In the second match of the day, the Hawks got back to their winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Hartwick College. The team won with scores of 25-16, 26-28, 25-17 & 25-18. It the combination of strong attacking play and great defense at the net that helped the Hawks secure the victory. Gajda led the way with 11 kills while Stosic chipped in with eight kills, three solo blocks and three block assists, while hitting .278%.
Julia Connolly had seven kills to go along with three block assists and Barrett had six kills, one solo block and three block assists.
On Saturday the Hawks first opponent was St. Lawrence University, they proceeded earn a sweep with the scores of 25-23, 25-22, 25-23. The team was once again excellent attacking at the net totaling 39 kills in the three set win. Gajda once again led the way with 11 kills, while Connolly and Stosic each had eight.
The final match of the tournament was against Ithaca College where the Hawks lost in three sets. The team fought in each set but was unable to overcome Ithaca's strong front line. Stosic led all players with 13 kills while Gajda, Connolly, Aquino and Barrett all had six kills.
The Hawks end the regular season with a 21-15 record and 7-0 record in CUNYAC, which earned the team the #1 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Tournament. The Hawks quest for the NCAA's begins Tuesday November 4 when they take on York College in the CUNYAC Quarterfinals at home in the Sportsplex. The game is set to begin at 6pm and it will be the final home game for seniors
