New York, NY - Hunter College women's tennis defeated #2 seeded College of Staten Island this past weekend with a score of 5-4 to advance to the CUNYAC Championship match on Tuesday against #1 Baruch.
#3 seeded Hunter met the Dolphins in the semifinals match for the second-straight year, but were able to come away with the victory this time. Hunter fell behind in doubles competition as CSI earned the advantage with a score of 2-1.
Angelina Usherenko and
Sara Beck earned Hunter's lone doubles win with a score of 8-3.
The Hawks fell in the first singles match of the day but were able to come back from the 3-1 deficit as
Olivia Funk defeated Nozima Toshpulatova in two sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Hunter then tied the score when Beck won two consecutive sets (6-3 and 6-2) and then
Catherine Ng helped Hunter take the lead winning in two sets over CSI's Samantha Mazier with scores of 6-2 and 6-2.
The Dolphins did not go away easy as they tied the score again with a singles win of their own.
The match would come down to the final contest of the day as Hunter's Usherenko took the first two sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-2 to give Hunter the win over the Dolphins, 5-4.
Hunter will advance to the championship match where they will face Baruch College on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Queens College.
