BOX SCORE 2 New York, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball went 2-0 over the weekend in a tri-match tournament, hosted at the Hunter Sportsplex. The Hawks defeated Grinnell College in five sets before getting a victory over Centenary College in three.
Grinnell took the early lead in the first set, starting the game with a 6-2 run. Hunter quickly regained composure, tying the score and then taking a 10-9 lead. From there the score would go back-and-forth as each team struggled to maintain a solid lead. Hunter would eventually get the win with a score of 25-19 to lead the match, 1-0.
The second set was just as close as both teams fought for the lead. With the score tied, 11-11 Hunter went on a run to lead by five points. The lead would not be enough as the Pioneers ended the set with a 7-1 run to win, 25-23 and tie the match, 1-1.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set, but the Hawks recorded a few kills to pull ahead and make the score 12-10. The set contuned to be a battle the teams tied the score at 24. From there there Grinnell found three-straight points and won the third set, 27-25.
The fourth set was once again a struggle for the lead as the set was eventually tied at 18. Hunter would score five straight points, featuring kills from
Julia Connolly and
Breanna Banske to win, 25-20 and send the match into the fifth set.
With the score tied at five in the fifth set, Hunter began to dominate, scoring seven of the next nine points for a 12-7 lead. The Hawks would close it out with a final score of 15-12 to take the match, 3-2.
In the second match of the day Hunter gave Centenary College a loss with a score of 3-0. The Hawks took care of business by taking the first set with a score fo 25-13. The team then won the next two sets with scores of 25-10 and a dominating 25-7 win.
The Hawks will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 27 when they travel to College of Staten Island for a 7 p.m. match.
