BOX SCORE BRONX, NY - The Hunter men's basketball team lost 79-77 in the CUNY Basketball Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks finish the season with 9-17 record.
The Lightning opened the game with a 9-0 run to lead the Hawks with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The Hawks began to chip away the deficit when
Lester Anim hit a corner 3-pointer to finally get the Hawks on the board with 14:10 left in the half.
Over the next five minutes, the Hawks used a 20-9 run, highlighted by another Anim triple, to take a 20-17 lead with 9:55 left in the half.
The remainder of the half was back and forth with the Hawks taking a 32-26 lead on a
Brian Kruger 3-pointer with 5:17 remaining. The Lightning would cut the lead as the teams went into halftime tied at 40.
The Lightning opened up the second half with a 13-4 run to take a 53-44 lead with just under four minutes gone by. The Hawks would come back to within five after another Kruger 3-pointer made the score 60-55.
Jerrell Antley would tie the score at 65 when he made a transition jumper with just over seven minutes remaining in the game, forcing a Lehman timeout. After the timeout,
Matt Franks would hit a jumper to give the Hawks a 67-65 lead.
The Lightning would take the lead back after a jumper made the score 70-69, their lead would grow to six points with just under three minutes to go.
The Hawks didn't go away as three straight field goals, capped off by an Antley lay-in, tied the score at 77 with 10.1 seconds remaining.
Lehman would make two free throws to take a 79-77 lead, the Hawks game-winning attempt would come up short as the buzzer sounded.
The Hawks had four players in double-figures, led by Anim's game-high 20 points. Kruger would add 16 points and six rebounds, while Antley chipped in with 15 points. Franks would score 14 points, grab eight rebounds and dish out five assists.
