Women's Volleyball Rallies for Dramatic 3-2 Win Over NYU

Connolly and Kerr-Haiduk Combine For 31 Kills

BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball won its second-straight match on Friday night, defeating New York University for the first time since 2011 in a dramatic comeback that featured a final score of 3-2.

The Hawks (12-9, 5-0 CUNYAC) fell behind early 2-0 but rallied off three-straight sets to get the victory over non-conference rival NYU.

The first set started close with the score tied at 13 before the Violets would go on an 8-1 run to take the lead and win the first, 25-16.

Almost a carbon copy of the first, the two teams tied the score at 12 in the second before NYU caught momentum off a Hunter service error. From there the Violets closed out the second with a 13-1 run to get the 25-15 victory and lead the match 2-0.

The Hawks and Violets traded leads in the third until Hunter caught fire, finding kills from Julia Connolly and Samantha Barrett to propel the Hawks to a 16-8 lead. Three-straight attack errors from NYU helped the Hawks finish the Violets off, easily taking the third set with a score of 25-13.

Looking to force a fifth set, the Purple and Gold started out slow in the fourth, trailing the Violets early, 12-5. A couple of kills from Connolly and Taylor Kerr-Haiduk would help the Hawks slowly chip away at NYU's lead as the team eventually tied the score at 18. From there NYU capitalized on Hunter attack errors to make the score 22-20, but Hunter continued to compete, scoring four-straight points that included two service aces from Breanna Banske to lead 24-22.

The set was far from over as the teams challenged each other with eight tied scores in the remaining moments. With Hunter trailing 31-30, Hunter's Miranda Hogan recorded a kill and the Hawks scored the last two points of the set to take the fourth with a score of 33-31.

NYU jumped out to the 4-1 lead in the final set but Hunter quickly surpassed them with a 5-0 run, contributed to by a Hogan service ace and two kills from Barrett. The Violets came back from a timeout to score, but it did not stop the Purple and Gold as they once again went on a run, scoring six-straight points to make the score 14-6. Kerr-Haiduk would be the decider in the match, earning a kill from Banske to give the Hawks the 15-8 win and the 3-2 match victory.

Connolly and Kerr-Haiduk led the team offensively with a combined 31 kills as Connolly notched 17 and Kerr-Haiduk found 14. Kerr-Haiduk also had a fantastic match defensively, recording 17 digs. Haley Trunkett led the team with 25 digs in the win, while Hogan followed with 24 of her own. Banske added 38 assists in the historic victory.

The squad returns to action on Monday when they compete in a CUNYAC multi-match tournament.
