BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College men's basketball fell to Mahattanville College in their home opener on Tuesday night, 75-67 at the Hunter Sportsplex.
The Purple and Gold led the Valiants early in the game, finding points from
Gio Gabbidon,
Amer Lukac and
Gerard Carty to give Hunter a 16-13 edge in the first ten minutes. From there the Valiants went on a 13-2 run to lead 26-18, but Hunter finished the first half strong as Carty scored four-straight points and
Matt Franks hit a layup to help the Hawks trail by just three points at halftime.Â
Lukac came out in the second half on fire for the Hawks, scoring four-straight points, while
Blendi Ibraj hit a shot from behind the arc to give Hunter a 38-34 lead just three minutes into play. The Purple and Gold would not lose the lead until the 13 minute mark as Manhattanville began an 11-0 run. Four-straight points from Carty would keep the Hawks in the game as Hunter went on a 5-0 run to trail by just three points with six minutes to play.
The Valiants converted off foul shots to take another solid lead, but Lukac managed to hit a three-pointer for Hunter to trail by just five with 3:30 left in the game. That would be the closest the Hawks would get as Manhattanville managed to keep them away, eventually getting the win with a score of 75-67.
Four players scored in double-figures as Gabbidon led the way with 15 points. Carty and Lukac recorded 14 points each while Franks followed with 12. Carty led the squad on the boards, recording ten rebounds for a double-double.
The Hawks shot 44.1 (26-59) percent from the floor in the loss, while the Valiants recorded a field goal percentage of 42.4 percent (25-59). Manhattanville was able to out-rebound Hunter by just two boards, getting the 37 to 35 edge.Â
Hunter returns to action on Friday and Saturday when they travel to the Drew University Open.
