BOX SCORE Madison, NJ - Hunter College men's basketball pulled out a victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Marywood University in overtime with a score of 85-82.
The win is the Hawk's first of the season, making them 1-2 so far this year.
Hunter started the game on fire, immediately going up 18-2 in the first seven minutes of play. From there the Hawks didn't let up, never allowing the Pacers within less than 14 points of them for the rest of the half. A 12-4 run in the last five minutes secured the 42-24 Hunter lead going into halftime.
The Purple and Gold continued to put up points in the second half as baskets from
Blendi Ibraj and
Lowell Stevens helped the team keep a 20 point lead.Â
Marywood started their comeback with 16 minutes to play, first going on a 13-1 run to trail by just eight points.
Gio Gabbidon, Stevens and Ibraj each scored to put the Hawks back up by 15 with ten minutes to play but the Pacers continued to chip away at the score, trailing by just one point at the 4:48 minute mark.
Danny Fusco hit a three and
Matt Franks converted on two free throws to give Hunter a six-point lead with 1:17 to play.Â
Marywood scored eight points in the last minute, hitting a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game and send it into overtime.Â
The score went back-and-forth in overtime unti Hunter got a lead with 2:47 left in the game. They would not give up the lead for the rest of the game as
Amer Lukac,
Gerard Carty and Franks combined for nine points in the remaining minutes to eventually lead Hunter to an 85-82 victory.Â
Five Hawks scored in double-figures with Franks leading the fight with 18 points. Lukac followed with 15, while Fusco chipped in 12 points. Ibraj and Carty scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, with Carty dishing out a team-high of six assists.
Gabbidon added nine points, while leading the team with four steals in the win.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday when they host USMMA at 7 p.m.
