New York, NY – The #14 men's volleyball team swept The City College of New York in a CUNYAC contest earlier this evening at the Hunter Sportsplex. After dominating the first set, 25-12, they continued to roll through the next two, 25-17 and 25-20, resulting in their seventh win of the season. The victory advances the Purple and Gold to 7-2 overall and an unblemished 3-0 in conference play.
Benjamin Crusinberry registered a game high 12 kills to go along with his .474 hitting percentage. Meanwhile,
Blake Hogan and Steve Tarquinio combined for 15 kills. Setter
Nicolas Sanchez tallied five digs and 22 assists in the win; another Hunter game high.
Overall, Hunter dominated on both ends of the court, posting 41 kills to CCNY's 18, collecting 38 assists to the Beaver's 17, and posting five blocks and as many assists while their counterparts only earned one in each category. Finally, their offense shined as proven by their .400 hitting percentage compared to their CUNYAC rival's -.044.
The first set was close as CCNY tied the game through the first five points and then remained within striking distance despite finding themselves down by three at 12-9. However, four straight Hunter points, sparked by a Crusinberry kill gave his squad a commanding 18-10 lead. After a
Matthew Zukowski service error, a kill from Hogan and service ace from
Daniel Dobrogowski sparked five unanswered points to further extend their lead to 13. Crusinberry, on an assist from Tarquinio, capped a 13-3 run and nailed in the 25
th point for the set win.
CCNY took their first lead of the game in the second set at 3-2 and again at 5-4. However, a CCNY service error and four straight attack errors opened flood gates as Hunter went out ahead, 9-5. After trading points, back-to-back kills from Hogan set the stage for a 16-10 affair. The six point lead proved enough to hold on for the win as they closed the match on a 9-7 run.
In the third, CCNY turned the tables on the Hawks through the opening 15 points. A 7-1 run in the early stages made it an 8-4 game in favor of the visitors. A kill by Tarquinio stopped the bleeding and they responded with a 4-1 run of their own, pulling within one at 10-9. Still down, the Purple and Gold finally pulled even with the visitors at 16 apiece courtesy of another Tarquinio kill. Glen Lumentut followed it up with a kill while Crusinberry rattled off two straight points to make it a 19-16 game. Not letting the Beavers get within three, the match was ended on a service error by Sebastjano Aga, 25-20.
The Hawks return to action Saturday when they host NJCU at 11am and then the #1 ranked team in the country, Springfield College at 3pm.
