Jamaica, NY - Hunter College men's basketball fell to York College on Tuesday in a close contest with a score of 79-74. The Hawks close out the regular season with a 3-22 overall record and 3-13 in conference play.
Brian Kruger scored 20 points in the loss, while
Gerard Carty followed with 14 points.
Matt Franks and
Bryan Silvera added 11 and ten points, respectively. The Hawks shot 43.5 percent from the floor, while holding the Cardinals to a 38.5 field goal percentage.
The Hawks gained the early 8-4 lead in the first half but a run by York would tie the score and allow the Cardinals to take the lead at the 13:27 minute mark. With seven minutes left in the half Silvera would hit a three-pointer and then follow that up with a layup to help the Hawks lead by three, but York once again went a on run to lead by one point at halftime.
Hunter started the second half strong as Carty immediately scored five-straight points and Kruger added a basket from behind the arc to give the Hawks the 43-36 edge. The Hawks were able to maintain that lead until 12 minutes left in the game when the Cardinals would score seven-straight points. The remaining minutes would feature five tied scores and four lead changes as each team struggled to retain the lead.Â
With five minutes to play the Cardinals earned a one-point lead and never looked back, keeping the lead to close out the game with a score of 79-74.
The Hawks will play in the first-round of the CUNYAC tournament on Friday, Feb. 19.Â
