Men's Hoops Comes up Short Against Brooklyn, 103-96

Five players scored in the double digits.

Brooklyn, NY - The men's basketball team took on the Brooklyn College Bulldogs in a CUNYAC contest on Friday evening. Despite a season high 96 point offensive output, the Hawks came up short as their counterparts used a 103 point assault to steal the win. Hunter slips to 3-20, 3-11 CUNYAC with the loss.

Alex Mattina was the high scorer for Hunter, draining 25 points on an efficient 9-18 from the field which included going 6-12 from downtown. Matt Franks chipped in with 16 points which included a perfect 6-6 performance from the charity stripe while teammate Gerard Carty did his part with 15 points. Brian Kruger and Amer Lukac also reached double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.

The Bulldogs took the lead from the get-go and never looked back. A game opening 11-2 run set Hunter back from the start. Despite chipping away at the deficit and cutting it back to three on two occasions, the point differential eventually blew up to 15 points. Hunter came within four at the 4:49 mark but went cold the rest of the quarter, tallying just two more points as they headed into the half down 61-46.

Despite out-scoring and shooting better from the floor and charity stripe in the second half, it was not enough to bridge the gap. Facing a double-digit deficit, Hunter was patient and slowly began chopping away at the Bulldog lead. A layup from Carty, followed by two made free throws from Lukac made it a five-point affair with 5:45 showing on the clock. Franks nailed a three-pointer to make it a four point game with under 4:40 left to play. However, it's as close as they would get after Brooklyn held off the charge, eventually taking the win by a seven point margin.

The men's basketball team gets back in action as they host Lehman College at the Sportsplex on Tuesday, February 9 at 7pm.
