New York, NY - The Hunter College softball team continued their undefeated play in the CUNYAC conference when they took on John Jay College in a double header at Randall's Island Thursday, April 14
th. The Hawks handled the Bloodhounds 14-3 and 16-3 and move to an overall season record of 8-10 and 6-0 in CUNYAC in the process.
Game 1 RecapThe Hawks' hot bats gave them 14 runs on 14 hits, propelling them to victory. Five players registered a multiple-hit game with
Erika Colangelo going 3-4 and
Emily Ruiz notching four RBI's.
Taylor Crofts and
Christine Kline had identical stat lines, each registering two hits, two RBI's and three runs scored. Colangelo took care of business as she struck out nine, allowed just three hits and did not give up a run in four full innings as she earned her third win of the season.
Alana Vezza immediately got the Hawks on the scoreboard when she belted a two-run homerun in the top of the first. After
Victoria Slavik doubled and stole third base, she scored off of an RBI triple from
Emily Ruiz. The Hawks ended the first inning with a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second inning, Colangelo and
Nicole Fillisetti, both scored after a Crofts two-RBI triple. Crofts later crossed home plate when Vezza hit into a fielder's choice, extending the Hunter lead to 6-0.
The Purple and Gold's bats loaded the bases in the top of the third inning. Three straight errors by the Bloodhound's defense allotted four consecutive runs for the visiting Hunter squad, enabling them to go up 10-0.
Hunter again loaded the bases in the 5
th inning.
Briana Monaco hit into a fielder's choice, but picked up an RBI in the process. Ruiz step pedto the batter's box and smack a three-run homerun, bringing in Monaco and Slavik to put her team ahead 14-0.
John Jay got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but it's all they would be able to manufacture as the deficit proved too large for them to overcome.
Game 2 RecapThe Purple and Gold continued their hitting clinic in the second game, roping 16 runs on 16 hits. Both Crofts and Ruiz accounted for four hits and three RBI's apiece while Slavik and Monaco combined for seven RBI's and four hits. Overall, seven players registered at least one hit while six drove in at lease one run.
Sara Beck went the full five innings, giving up just three runs on five hits while striking out five to earn her fourth win of the season.
It was the Bloodhounds who got on the scoreboard first after a two-run bottom of the first. However, It would not take long for the Hawks to respond. In the top of the second inning, with
Stefanie Abolt on second base, Crofts brought her home with an RBI single.
Hunter notched three more runs in the top of the third inning after Monaco recorded a two RBI single. After an error by the John Jay defense, Monaco scored setting the scoreboard at 4-2 in favor of the Hawks.
The Bloodhounds responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third, chopping the lead to one at 4-3.
Hunter injected 11 runs to their score in the top of the fourth inning. Highlights include two RBI doubles from Crofts, Ruiz, and two from Slavik. Kline, Abolt and Monaco also recorded RBIs of their own. Once all was said and done, the Purple and Gold found themselves at a comfortable 15-3 advantage.
Ruiz's RBI single in the top of the fifth put the icing on the cake as Hunter came away with the 16-3 victory.
Up next, Hunter faces the College of Staten Island tomorrow, April 16
th, in a double header at Randall's Island starting at 12PM. In addition, the team will celebrate Softball Alumni Day and invite all to join them at the field at 10am.
