BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball got a win over non-conference opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island on Tuesday night, going into four sets with scores of 25-20, 26-24, 25-15 and 25-19.
The Hawks are now 5-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play so far this season.
The first set was close, featuring 11 tied scores, until the Purple and Gold took control at the end of the set by scoring five-straight points to get the 25-20 win and a 1-0 lead.
Hunter started the second set strong, going on a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead, but St. Joseph's went on a run of their own, outscoring the Hawks 5-1. With the score tied at 12 the Golden Eagles capitalized on several Hunter errors to take a 19-13 lead. The Purple and Gold came back from a timeout on fire by scoring five-straight points, but would falter at the end of the close set with a score of 26-24.Â
The third set began just as close as the first two as the lead changed four times. With the score tied, 7-7, Hunter scored eight-straight points off kills from
Julia Connolly to demand a 15-7 lead. The Golden Eagles came back to trail by just four, but the Hawks continued to dominate, taking the fourth set with a score of 25-15.
St. Joseph's started the fourth by jumping out to a 6-1 lead over the Hawks but Hunter came storming back to tie the score 9. From there the Hawks found kills from
Taylor Kerr-Haiduk and
Miranda Hogan to help them take the lead. Connolly and Hogan would record two kills in the final moments of the match to secure the fourth set win with a score of 25-19 and give Hunter the 3-1 victory.Â
Kerr-Haiduk was the dominating force in the match as she recorded a team-high 18 kills and ten digs for the Hawks.
Breanna Banske added 27 assists and
Haley Trunkett continued to pace the Purple and Gold on defense with 23 digs.Â
The team will return to action on Friday and Saturday when they compete in the Ramapo Invitational.Â
