Men's Hoops Wins Overtime Thriller Against York

Hawks Defeat Cardinals By One Point

BOX SCORE Jamaica, NY - Hunter College men's basketball defeated York College in the final seconds of overtime on Tuesday night with a score of 86-85.

The Hawks pulled out the win in their third overtime game this season, improving to 8-13 overall and evening out to 6-6 in the CUNYAC.

Hunter trailed in the first half 41-35 after York shot 50.0 percent from the field. Amer Lukac and Gio Gabbidon recorded nine points each to lead the Purple and Gold in the first 20 minutes.

The Cardinals started the second half strong, going up by as much as 11 points until a three-pointer from Danny Fusco at the 10 minute mark would spark a Hunter run. Matt Franks and Lukac followed that up by combining for nine points in three minutes to help the team trail by just one.

With 3:24 remaining in the game and York up by one point, Hunter's Mamadou Sakho hit a shot from behind the arc and then scored a layup to give the Hawks a two-point lead. One minute later he sunk another three-pointer as the Hawks led 76-71 with 1:31 to play.

The Cardinals converted on free throws and then hit a shot with 22 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime.

In the extra five minutes of play the Hawks outscored York 9-5, featuring points from Franks, Fusco, Sakho and Lowell Stevens. With one second remaining and a tied score, York committed a foul and Fusco hit a free throw to pull out an exciting 86-85 victory.

The win was a collective effort with Lukac leading the Hawks with 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Sakho had one of his best games of the season with 18 points and 16 boards, shooting 3-4 from behind the three-point line.
