High Scoring Night Not Enough in Men's Hoops' Loss

Amer Lukac Records Career High of 30

BOX SCORE New York, NY - A career-high of 30 points from Amer Lukac was not enough to lift Hunter College over Wheelock College on Wednesday night as the Hawks fell with a score of 92-79 at the Hunter Sportsplex.

This was the Hawk's fourth-straight loss as they drop to 5-7 overall this season, despite their third-highest point total of the season.

Both teams had a hot shooting night as the score went back-and-forth early in the first half until Wheelock would keep a small lead for most of the half. The Hawks never let them get more than five points away as a layup from Lukac tied the score at 35 with three minutes to play in the first. A free throw from Gio Gabbidon and a jumper from Matt Franks kept the Hawks in the game, eventually tying the score 39-39 at halftime.

The Purple and Gold shot a 48.4 field goal percentage in the first 20 minutes, while the Wildcats shot 45.9 percent from the floor. Lukac led the team with 14 points and was closely followed by Franks with 10 points during the first half.

Lukac caught fire again to start the second half, scoring 12 of Hunter's 14 points in the first four minutes of play. His scoring gave the Hawks a 53-48 lead with 15:37 left of action. The Wildcats began to come back, tying the score at the 13:24 minute mark and then going on a 11-4 run to take a seven-point lead. A three-pointer from Hunter's Benny DiMirco broke the streak and Lukac and Franks followed that up with a combined seven points to keep the Hawks close.

With five minutes to play the Wildcats began to pull away, hitting three three-pointers in one minute to secure the eventual 92-79 victory.

Lukac finished with a career-high of 30 points and was just one rebound shy of a double-double, while Franks followed with 19 points of his own. The Hawks recorded a 48.4 field goal percentage in the loss.

The team returns to CUNYAC action on Friday, Jan. 6 when they host York College at 7 p.m.
