BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College men's basketball got its fourth CUNYAC win on Friday night, defeating York College with a score of 87-78 at the Hunter Sportsplex.
The Hawks improve to 6-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Despite both teams recording the same amount of field goals, three pointers were the difference maker in the first half of the game as Hunter sunk six, including two from
Mamadou Sakho, in the first 20 minutes of the game to lead 36-27 at halftime.
Amer Lukac led the team at the half with nine points and six rebounds.
Lukac, Sakho and
Gio Gabbidon each hit shots to start the second half strong for the Purple and Gold, sparking a run that would give Hunter a 21 point lead with 14 minutes to play.
The Cardinals began to shoot much better in the second, closing the lead to just ten points, but the Hawks converted on free throws down the stretch to remain in control and get the 87-78 victory.Â
The Purple and Gold shot 44.4 percent from the field in the win, forcing 24 York turnovers and hitting 27 free throws in comparison to the Cardinal's ten.
Four players had big scoring nights for the Hawks as Lukac led the team with 23 points and eight rebounds. Sahko had his most solid game to date, scoring 17 points off five three-pointers, recording eight rebounds and tallying a team-high four steals.
Danny Fusco also added 17 points and five assists, while
Matt Franks chipped in 16 points.
The team returns to action on Monday, January 9 when they face Lehman College at 7 p.m.
