Union, N.J. - Hunter College women's volleyball fell in just its fourth match this season to #7 ranked Kean University on Friday night, dropping the fifth set by just three points.
The Hawks finished the regular season with a 25-4 record before competing in the CUNYAC championship tournament next weekend.
The first set remained close until the Cougars scored eight-straight points to take a 20-13 lead. The Hawks managed to catch up and trail by just three points but Kean got the last kill to take the first set, 25-21.
Hunter took the lead in the second set as four kills from
Marlena Budna pushed the Hawks to a 20-13 advantage. The Purple and Gold closed it out with five straight points, featuring two kills from Budna and a service ace from
Julia Connolly to tie the match, 25-15.
The Hawks seemed in control of the third set but the Cougars went on a six-point run to make the score 24-17 and then win, 25-18.
Back-to-back kills from
Taylor Haiduk gave Hunter a solid four-point lead in the fourth set until Kean caught back up to tie the score at 15. From there the Hawks scored five-straight and kills from Budna, Haiduk and
Kendra Moore gave them the 24-19 edge.
The Purple and Gold looked as they would easily take the fourth, but Kean began to chip away at the score, recording six-straight points to lead by one. The Hawks did not give up as Haiduk recorded a kill,
Emily Wasson and Moore got a block and Haiduk finished it off with a service ace to take the set, 27-25 and send it into the fifth.
Hunter quickly took a 5-2 lead before Kean tied the score 11-11. Kills from Haiduk and Wasson gave the Hawks their last lead of the match (12-11) as the Cougars scored the last four points to take the set, 15-12 and win the match, 3-2.
The Purple and Gold hit .147 in the loss, while Kean recorded a hitting percentage of .146
Haiduk led the team with 15 kills, while Budna followed with 14 and Wasson added ten. Connolly and Moore each chipped in seven kills, with Moore committing just one error for a .400 hitting percentage.
Defensively,
Haley Trunkett led the Hawks with 25 digs, followed by Haiduk's 12 and
Miranda Hogan's 11. Hogan tallied 42 assists in the five-set loss.
The team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 3 when they compete in the CUNYAC Championships, hosted at the Hunter Sportsplex.
