Women's Volleyball Falls in Three to Stevens Tech on Wednesday

Hawks Fall in Three Close Sets

New York, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball fell in a hard-fought match on Wednesday night to Stevens Institute of Technology in three sets (25-21, 25-20, 27-25).

The Hawks even out to 1-1 this season after opening up the year with a win over Manhattanville.

The match started with the Ducks taking a cammanding lead in the first set with a score of 21-13. From there the Hawks would go on a 7-2 run, featuring back-to-back kills from Emily Wasson and Julia Connolly to trail by just three points and get back in the game. Despite a Stevens service error, the Ducks ended up taking the set 25-21.

Taylor Haiduk opened up the second set with a kill and Wasson followed it up with one of her own, but Stevens once again took a solid lead of 15-5. It seem like the Ducks would pull away, but Hunter began their comeback by capitalizing on Stevens errors and scoring six-straight points. Behind 24-16, the Purple and Gold went on another run, recording four-straight off a service ace from Connolly and back-to-back kills from Marlena Budna to make the score 24-20. To their dismay, the Hawks committed a service error on game point to fall 25-20 and trail in the match, 2-0.

In the third set it would be Hunter's turn to take the early edge as kills from Wasson and Budna put the Hawks up 11-4. A Stevens run tied the game at 19, but Hunter managed to pull ahead to make the score 24-20. It looked as though the Purple and Gold would take the set, but the Ducks came back with a 7-1 run to win 27-25 and get the match victory, 3-0.

Haiduk led the team with 10 kills, while Connolly and Wasson each followed with nine. Wasson posted a team-high hititng percentage of .389 as Budna recorded six blocks and eight kills in the loss. Trunkett led the squad on defense with 13 digs.

The team returns to action on Saturday, September 9 when they compete in a CUNYAC Tri-Match.
