Women's Volleyball Finishes Landmark Season With a Loss to Mustangs

Hawks Fall to Stevenson in Five Sets

Ithaca, N.Y. - Hunter College women's volleyball finished up the 2018 campaign on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Championships, dropping a nail-biting match to Stevenson University in five exciting sets.

The team wraps up the year with a 24-9 overall record and their fifth-straight CUNYAC Championship.

The Hawks started the first set with a block from Kendra Moore and Miranda Hogan to get the first point of the match. The Mustangs and the Hawks continued to fight back-and-forth, tying the score up 10 times until a kill from Emily Wasson and a service ace from Haley Trunkett put the Hawks up by two, 16-14. From there the Purple and Gold began to pull ahead, finding points from Kylie Hurst and Marlena Budna to get a four-point lead. The Mustangs caught up to tie the score at 21 and then finished it out by scoring four of the last five points for a 25-22 first-set score.

The second set began close again, but the Hawks managed to gain momentum earlier, going on a 7-0 run with three kills from Hurst to take a 10-6 advantage. The Hawks maintained the lead, forcing a Stevenson timeout and making the score 18-9. The Mustangs began to make a comeback, going on a 9-2 run to trail by just two points, but the Hawks got it together by ending the set with a kill from Budna to win 25-19 and tie up the match.

Stevenson took the first lead of the third set that saw three lead-changes until Hunter found two kills from Taylor Haiduk to give them a 15-10 edge. The Hawks kept their composure, never allowing the Mustangs within less than four points of them and earning the last four points of the set to take it 25-16.

Neither team could catch a solid lead at the beginning of the fourth as it featured eight tied scores until the Mustangs pulled ahead. Stevenson stayed in control for the rest of the set, winning 25-19 to send the match into the fifth set.

The fifth set proved to be the most competitive of the night as the Mustangs jumped out to a 5-2 lead. From there the Purple and Gold went to work as Budna and Wasson combined for three kills to help Hunter surpass the Mustangs with a score of 7-6. Stevenson stayed with them, tying the score, but another Budna kill and a service ace from Hurst gave the Hawks back the one-point lead. Hunter errors forced them to trail by two on Stevenson's game-point, allowing the Hawks a chance to make an unbelievable comeback as Moore and Hurst scored points to give the Purple and Gold a 15-14 advantage. Hunter failed to finish off the Mustangs, giving up three-straight points to fall in the first round of the NCAA tournament, 17-15.

Five players recorded kills in double-figures with Budna and Hurst leading with 13 each, and Haiduk, Moore and Wasson adding 11 apiece. Miranda Hogan continued to pace the Hunter offense as she has all season, registering 46 assists in the loss. The Hawks posted 101 digs in the match with Haley Trunkett and Sunghee Cho tallying 22 digs each, while Haiduk followed with 16 and Hogan chipped in 15.

The team ends the 2018 season in the first round and lose five seniors in Haley Trunkett, Taylor Haiduk, Kayshawna Richardson, Miranda Hogan and Marlena Budna.
