Gabbidon and Keener Lead Men's Basketball to Last-Minute Victory Over York

Gabbidon and Keener Combine for 35 Points

New York, N.Y. - Hunter College men's basketball finished off York College in the last minute of regulation on Tuesday night, defeating the Cardinals with a close score of 68-64 at the Hunter Sportsplex.

The Hawks improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while York is now 3-5 and 0-2.

After falling behind early in the game, the Hawks went on an 11-0 run in the first ten minutes to take a 13-8 lead. The Cardinals remained close by as the Hawks struggled to widen the lead to more than four points. Down by four with 27 seconds on the clock in the first half, York hit a three-pointer to come within one point. The Hawks responded with Melvin Collins knocking down a three at the buzzer to give Hunter a 30-26 advantage at halftime.

The Purple and Gold looked strong starting the second half as they scored ten quick points from George Keener, Gio Gabbidon and Abraham Rosow to lead by 12 points. The Cardinals went to work, chipping away at the score until they tied the Hawks 46-46 with 10:48 on the clock. Hunter attempted to hold onto an advantage, but York went on another run to tie the score again, 59-59, and then took a two-point lead with 2:33 left to play.

Gabbidon converted on two clutch free throws and Keener hit a layup to give the Hawks the 64-62 edge with one minute left, while York responded with a free throw to trail by just one point. With 18 seconds on the clock, Gabbidon hit a high-pressure jumper to help the Hawks lead by three points and Rosow sank two free throws as the Hawks took the game, 68-64.

Gabbidon finished with 19 points, while Keener posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Collins chipped in nine points for the Hawks in 13 minutes of play.

The team returns to the court on Friday, December 7 when they host Baruch College at 8:30 p.m.
