Women's Hoops Ends Season in Double Overtime to William Paterson

Jade Aponte Scores Her 1000th Career Point

New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's basketball finished the 2017-18 season on Wednesday night in the first round of the ECAC Championship Tournament with a loss to William Paterson University in double overtime at the Hunter Sportsplex.

The Hawks end the year with an 18-10 overall record, while going 10-6 in CUNYAC play. Junior Jade Aponte scored her 1000th career point in the loss, ending the game with a team-high 19 points.

Hunter led the majority of the first half, leading the Pioneers at halftime by 11 points with a score of 35-24. The Hawks continued to scored in the third quarter, holding onto the lead as WPU trailed by nine going into the fourth.

The Pioneers scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 51 before the Hawks came back to score four-straight points and take back the lead. William Paterson stayed close for the rest of the quarter, keeping the Hawks within three points over the next six minutes. With Hunter leading by three points with 16 seconds left in the game the Pioneers' Tori Woetzel hit a three to tie the score and send it into overtime.

WPU got a two-point lead with 1:26 left in overtime, but Aponte hit free throws to tie it again, 73-73 with 28 seconds left. Neither team could score in the remaining time, forcing a second overtime.

Theresa Leung struck first for the Hawks in 2OT, followed by a free throw from Janine Conway to give Hunter a three-point edge. From there the Pioneers took control, going on a 12-2 run over the next two and half minutes to lead by nine with 46 seconds on the clock. Ashley Yu hit a jumper on the next possession but it would not be enough for the Hawks as they fell, 90-80.

Aponte led the team with 19 points, followed by Marlena Budna's double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds. Ashley Arias added 11 rebounds in the loss. 

The Hawks graduate just one senior in Ashley Yu.
