Kenosha, WI - Hunter College men's volleyball wrapped up the 2018 season on Friday night, falling in the first round of the NCAA Championship Tournament to Dominican University in three sets with scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-22.
The Hawks end the year with a 23-11 overall record, going 8-0 in conference play and capturing their third-straight CUNYAC Championship.
The Hawks started down in the first with a score of 4-0 before Qendrim Shala got a kill to put Hunter on the board. The squad finally got going after trailing by 11 as Matthew Zukowski recorded a kill to spark a run. From there Blake Hogan tallied a service ace as the Hawks capitalized on Dominican errors to end the set on a 4-1 run, despite falling 25-16.
The Purple and Gold began the second set with a closer score, but eventually began to fall away as the Stars went on a 7-1 run to lead by ten points. Dominican closed out the second 25-15 to lead 2-0.
The Hawks struck first in the third set as Zukowski got a kill. Dominican took a small lead, but Hunter kept them close for most of the set, finding points from Hogan, Shala and Daniel Dobrogowski. The Stars looked like they would run away when they held onto a 20-13 lead, but Hunter made it interesting by outscoring Dominican 9-5 in the finals points. The Stars managed to close it out with a score 25-22 to eliminate Hunter.
Hogan led the team with nine kills, while Dobrogowski followed with seven and a team-high three blocks.
Joseph Muir led the defense with 14 digs as
Alec Helford posted 26 assists in the loss.
