Queens, NY - The top seeded Hunter Hawks claimed the CUNYAC Women's Tennis Championship trophy earlier this afternoon after ousting rivals Baruch College by a score of 5-2 at the USTA National Tennis Center. This is the Purple and Gold's first title since 2012 and 22nd overall championship in program history.
Monika Zaboklicki and
Elaine Zhang got the Hawks on the board first as they defeated their Baruch opponents at #3 doubles by a score of 8-1.
Malgorzata Kuczera and
Maryna Bohdanovska added to the lead with an 8-4 win over Natalie Ibelhaupt and Lauren Kraker at #2 doubles. When the doubles round concluded, it was the Hawks that led 2-1.
Zaara Afida blanked her opponent at top flight singles, 6-0. 6-0 while Kuczera emerged victorious against Justina Camaj, 6-1, 6-1. Leading 4-1, the Purple and Gold needed just one more singles victory to secure the CUNYAC Championship and that came at the racket of
Elaine Zhang. The senior topped Baruch's Regina Kelley 6-3, 6-1 to put the finishing touches on the 5-2 match.
For her efforts throughout the post-season, Bohdanovska was named the Tournament MVP.
With the win, the Hawks not only secure the first points in the CUNYAC Commissioner's Cup, but also punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament which will take place in the spring of 2020.
