Women's Volleyball Splits Weekend Tri-Match

The Hawks defeated Scranton but lost to DeSales

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Scranton, PA – The women's volleyball team split their tri-match over the weekend hosted by Scranton University. They defeated Scranton in five for the second time this season but fell to DeSales in a close five-set match as they move to 11-15 overall.

Scranton Recap
Kylie Hurst and Mariam Ouattara combined for 25 of Hunter's 46 kills in the win. Meanwhile, Sunghee Cho tallied 21 digs, Justine Smith registered 35 assists, and Isabelle Lawrence had two block solos and four block assists, aiding in the victory. The Hawks played a clean game with just 25 errors while their counterparts had 50.

Hunter went up 1-0 thanks to a 25-18 first set, and then came from behind in the second. Down 24-20, a kills from Hurst and Lawrence, coupled with two Scranton errors made it tied at 24. After trading a point each, the Purple and Gold secured the second set victory, 27-25 courtesy of two host errors.

In the third, with the match knotted at 17, Scranton put in a 6-0 run that proved just enough to snag the set victory, 25-20 to force a fourth set. Evenly played throughout, Hunter found themselves on level playing field late at 22-22. However, the scrappy hosts managed to reach 25 points first to set the stage for a fifth and deciding set. There, the Hawks put in a crippling 9-1 run that gave them enough of a cushion to claim the victory, 15-7.

DeSales Recap
Hurst and Ouattara once again combined for 25 kills while Smith was tabbed for 41 assists. Defensively, Cho, Hurst and Smith tallied a total of 56 of the team's 88 digs.

Despite finding themselves in a 2-0 hole, suffering scores of 25-17 and 25-19, the Hawks bounced back in the third. With a commanding 11 point lead at 21-10, the Hawks allowed DeSales to get back in it with seven unanswered points, but held them off toward the end with a kill by Curran Murray, making it 2-1. In the fourth set, the scoreboard showed 17 all until Hunter went on a 4-0 run, inching them closer to forcing a fifth set. Two DeSales errors followed by a Smith kill secured the 25-20 set win.

In the final set, an 8-1 DeSales run proved to be too much to overcome. At 11-4, the deficit was insurmountable with Hunter pulling to within five, but they ran out of real estate when Georgia Traynor hammered home the 15th and final point, serving the Purple and Gold the loss.

Hunter returns to action on Tuesday evening, October 29 when they close out their final CUNYAC game against Medgar Evers at 7pm.
