New York, NY - The #1 seeded Hunter women's volleyball team defeated the #4 Beavers of CCNY earlier this afternoon by a score of 3-1. With the win, the Purple and Gold will take center stage at 8pm and play for the CUNYAC Championship and attempt to win their sixth straight title.
Offensively,
Kylie Hurst and
Isabelle Lawrence combined for 29 kills while
Justine Smith registered a game high 35 assists.
Sunghee Cho tallied 15 digs while Lawrence added three blocks in the win. As a team, Hunter hit .260 in the match and hammered home 53 kills on 127 total attempts.
Hunter held a slight edge from the early stages of the first but then put in a 7-1 run to go up 20-12 which proved too much for their opponents to overcome. A kill from Hurst and a setting error from CCNY's Dzeneta Harambasic put the finishing touches on a 25-18 first set. However, the Beavers came out firing on all cylinders in the second, jumping out to a surprising 10-2 lead with six of their points coming from Hunter errors. Still trailing by eight,
Mariam Ouattara's kill stopped the bleeding and gave her team a slight boost to get back in it and helping to rally and cut the deficit to just one point at 19-18. However, five more unanswered points proved to be the difference maker in the set as CCNY leveled the playing field at one set apiece with a 25-21 win.
Head Coach
Alyssa Broccoli's squad regrouped and went back to playing Hunter volleyball in the third. They commanded both ends of the court and enjoyed a comfortable 18-8 upper hand and did not allow their challengers to get back in it, taking the third set, 25-15. The fourth seeded visitors erased a late four point hole late in the fourth set to make it a 19-18 affair in favor of the home team. However, it was Hunter who proved to be too strong down the stretch as they capped the match victory with a 25-21 final set on back-to-back kills from Hurst and Ouattara.
Hunter will face the winner of #2 Baruch and #3 Brooklyn in the Championship match. First serve is slated for an 8pm start.
