BOX SCORE 1 |
BOX SCORE 2 Glenside, PA – The women's volleyball team took part in the Arcadia University Invitational on Saturday afternoon and suffered losses to each of their two opponents. They fell 3-0 to hosts Arcadia in the first match and then were downed 3-1 by UC Santa Cruz in the second and final match.
Match 1 – Arcadia (25-14, 25-18, 25-21)
Isabelle Lawrence and
Kylie Hurst combined for 13 of the Hawk's 25 kills in the match while
Summer Magliochetti had the setting duties and registered 14 assists with
Sunghee Cho tallying 13 digs in the loss. As a team, the Purple and Gold hit .088 and posted three aces and 40 team digs.
It was a rocky start as Hunter fell behind 5-0 and then fell victim to another five-point Arcadia run later on in the match to go down 13-4. Lawrence hammered home two kills to spark a 4-1 Hunter run, pulling within six, but the hosts' 15 kills in the first set proved to be too much as they went ahead 1-0 after taking the first set, 25-14. In the second, it was a more evenly played affair in the early stages after the Hawks took the lead after three straight kills from Hurst,
Ariana Silva and
Kendra Moore to set the scoreboard at 7-4. However with the score knotted at 10 apiece, Arcadia went on a 5-1 run and went on to take the set, 25-18.
The Hawks dropped the third by just four points to fall to the Knights.
Match 2 - UC Santa Cruz (25-13, 25-20, 19-25, 25-15)
Rodica Nedea tallied seven kills in the loss while Hurst and
Kendra Moore chipped in with six kills each.
Justine Smith registered 24 assists while Cho led three of her teammates in double digit digs with a team leading 16.
In the early stages, the Banana Slugs rallied for six unanswered points to take a 10-2 lead and further extended the lead to an insurmountable, 12 point cushion. Maiya Sears put away the 25th point with a kill to seal the first set. The Hawks hung tough in the second, staying within striking distance and took a late 17-15 lead. A kill from Moore on a Smith set brought the Purple and Gold to within one at 19-18, but down the final stretch, UC Santa Cruz had three straight kills to steal the second.
The third was all Hunter as they jumped out to an 8-3 upper hand, capped with back-to-back kills from Nedea. UC Santa Cruz did not go away easily as they responded with seven unanswered points to take their first lead at 10-8. With the set tied at 15 all, Smith gave her team the boost they needed with two straight service aces. Six of Hunter's final eight points came from their opponent's errors which helped them get on the board and win the set. In the fourth and final set, the Purple and Gold found themselves down by just three points at 12-9, but were outscored 12-6 over the final stretch to close out their tournament.
Up next, Hunter returns to the Sportsplex to host York College on Tuesday, September 24. First serve is set for 6pm.
