Men's Basketball Topples Medgar Evers, 101-74

The Hawks had five score in the double figures.

Brooklyn, NY – The men's basketball team came up with a big win on Wednesday over Medgar Evers on the road and secured their fourth victory of the season. The Hawks 101-74 victory marked their third win in the last four games as they appear to be finding their stride.

There were five Hunter (4-14, 4-4 CUNYAC) players who scored in the double figures, led by George Keener with 17 points on 7-12 shooting from the field. Gio Gabbidon's 16 point effort came by way of an efficient 6-7 shooting performance and sinking each of his four attempts from the free throw line. He also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jonah Bevacqua also posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards while Danny Fusco and Barrett Lowe rounded out the five in double digits.

The Purple and Gold crashed the boards hard and came away with a 26 rebound margin over their competitors and forced 15 turnovers on defense to couple their 10 steals and three blocks. On the offensive end of the court, they shot 51.4 percent from the field and sunk 23-30 from the charity stripe.

The Cougar's only lead came in the early minutes of the game when they were up 4-2. However,  it was quickly erased by a 13-2 Hunter run and then followed up with 11 unanswered points to make it a 26-7 affair. The Purple and Gold eclipsed the 50 point plateau with 2:33 left when Keener knocked down each of his attempts from the charity stripe. Heading into halftime, Hunter found themselves up 58-28.

Despite the hosts outscoring John Pelin's squad in the second half, it was by just three points. The Hawks held strong to their lead which was diminished to 23 at its lowest point. However, they grew the point differential to as much as 35 points at the highest. Jared Brown put the icing on the cake, sinking both of his tries from the free throw line to bring the Hawks to the 100 point mark.

Up next, the Hawks return to action on Friday, January 24 when they host the Trailblazers of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at the Sportsplex. Tip-off is for a 4pm start.
