Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Hunter Athletics

Women's Basketball Stopped by Brooklyn, 67-63

The Hawks pulled within two late, but ran out of time.

New York, NY - The women's basketball team suffered their first conference loss of the year to Brooklyn College earlier this evening at the Sportsplex by a score of 67-63. In defeat, the Hawks slip back to .500 with a 6-6 overall record and a 2-1 mark in CUNYAC action.

The Hawks were led once again by Janine Conway who tallied 24 points. Theresa Leung and Phoebe Valenton added 19 and 12 points respectively. The trio accounted for all seven of the Hawk's made three pointers.

It was all Hunter through the opening five minutes after leading from the get-go. Brooklyn's Taylor George made good on a layup to tie the game at 10 apiece; the first of four ties in the quarter. Two made free throws from Conway to close out the first quarter brought the game even at 18-18.

Things went south in the second quarter for the Purple and Gold. They missed on all of their 15 attempts from the floor and were held scoreless while Brooklyn went on to score 13 points to take a lead by as many points at the halfway point.

Despite the scoreless second, the Hawks were determined to get back in the game. Still trailing by 13 points with 6:24 showing on the clock, they went on a furious 15-4 run and pulled within two by the time the quarter ended.

A triple from Valenton midway through the final quarter brought her team to within one point. Leung hit two from down town late to keep the Purple and Gold within striking distance, but down the final stretch, George connected on five of her six free throw attempts to seal the deal.

Hunter returns to action on Wednesday, January 8 when they host the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island. Tip-off will be at 5pm.
