New York, NY – The women's basketball team made quick work of the Beavers of CCNY on Saturday evening, defeating the hosts by a score of 80-41. The victory bumps the Hawks to a 14-10 overall record with a 10-3 mark in conference action.
Hunter was led by
Theresa Leung who posted 20 points and came one rebound shy of a double-double, pulling down nine misses.
Janine Conway added 15 points while
Phoebe Valenton was an efficient 5-8 from the floor for 12 points.
Kristina Krslovic got it done on both ends of the court with five rebounds, five points, eight assists and two steals.
The Purple and Gold played the Beavers evenly through the first quarter and after the opening 10 minutes of the game, Hunter held just a one point lead, 15-14, thanks to a made free throw from
Maya Thompson.
Hunter erupted in the second quarter with 35 points which ultimately lifted them to the victory. CCNY managed just 12 points while the Hawks shot 56 percent from the floor and drained three triples. Defensively, they forced seven turnovers, and turned those into 14 points, and out-rebounded the hosts 16-5. In the second quarter alone, Conway accounted for 12 points while Valenton added 10. Heading into halftime, Hunter enjoyed a 49-27 advantage.
Another big quarter by the Purple and Gold in the third further put the game out of reach. At one point they led by 35 points and in the fourth, they extended it to 41 at its greatest. When the final buzzer sounded, Hunter was awarded the victory by way of an 80-41 victory.
The Hawks return home for their final game of the regular season on Tuesday, February 18 when they host the Bloodhounds of John Jay at 5pm. Currently, both Hunter and John Jay are knotted at 10-3 in the conference standings and Tuesday's contest will determine the #2 and #3 seeds in the upcoming CUNYAC Tournament.
