Hoboken, NJ – The Hunter College softball team opened up their 2020 campaign with a non-conference double header against Stevens Tech earlier this afternoon. Unfortunately the Hawks were swept with scores of 6-1 in the first game and 3-1 in the second to drop to 0-2 on the year.
Game 1
Maria Laboy accounted for two of the team's five hits on the afternoon. The third baseman had two singles and drove it one run while the top of the order,
Gianna Raimondi,
Erin Schweers and
Caroline Bibula, accounted for the other three hits. In the circle,
T'ea Panagakos went the distance, pitching all six innings and giving up four earned runs on nine hits and fanning one.
In the top of the third, Schweers got on base to start things off. Steven's left fielder scooped up a single hit by Bibula but committed an error resulting with runners on second and third with one out. Laboy ripped a single into left to drive home Schweers to go up 1-0.
However, Stevens responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and then tacked on one more in the fifth. Hunter's bats went cold over the final innings while the hosts registered three in the bottom of the sixth to seal the first game.
Game 2
Similar to the first game, it was Laboy who accounted for the Hawk's lone RBI while Raimondi, Schweers and
Allyson Bricker each registered one hit.
Francesca Cipollina tossed a complete game and allowed just one run and five hits while walking six.
A leadoff walk by Raimondi started the game off in the top of the first. Schweers' sac bunt advanced Raimondi to second and then Laboy's RBI single to left field scored Raimondi to put the Purple and Gold up 1-0.
The Hawks threatened in the second with two on and one out, but were unable to add to their lead. Meanwhile, the home team scored one run in the bottom of the second, fourth and sixth, making it a 3-1 affair heading into the final fram.
In the top of the seventh,
Sara Babiarz led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to third on a double from Schweers. However, a frozen rope to shortstop by Bibula ended the game with the score reading 3-1 in favor of the hosts.
Hunter opens up at home on Saturday, March 14 when they host New England College in a double header at Randall's Island. The first game will begin at 12pm with the second to follow.
