Women's Tennis Wins CUNYAC Championship; Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships

Flushing, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's tennis team defeated no. 2 Baruch College in the City University of New York Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon, 5-2, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The win also gives the Hawks a bid to the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships that will be played this upcoming May.

The win marks the program's 19th CUNYAC Championship for women's tennis, the first since 2019. Hunter went undefeated this year (12-0, 5-0 CUNYAC) and head coach, Alex Trezos earned Coach of the Year, while Sevinch Rakhmatdinova took home the Rookie of the Year title.

The day started off with no. 1 singles where Zaara Afida fell to CUNYAC Player of the Year,  Ava Deguzman (6-1, 6-2). However, the Hawks bounced back to win in no. 2 doubles, where Angelina Catania took down her opponent in two sets (7-5, 6-1). She was followed by another victory from Rakhmatdinova at no. 3 singles (6-3, 6-4). Rounding out singles play, Mia CHan was also victorious, taking the No.5 match 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play, Hunter dropped the no. 1 spot again as Afida and Rathi fell to Deguzman and Esther Benjamin, 8-1. Determined to take home the title, Catania and Rakhamatdinova teamed up to take no. 2 doubles 8-1. Finally, Anna Chapko and Mia Chan cruised to a 8-3 victory to finalize Hunter's championship win.
