BOX SCORE Purchase, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team defeated Purchase College on the road in a non-conference matchup, 109-105. The win marks the Hawks' highest points scored in regulation this season as standout
Luka Jakic garnered another double-double as he scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
Hunter (2-8, 0-1 CUNYAC) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with back-to-back threes from
Ryan Lau and
Cormac Reilly. The Hawks held that lead until the 15th minute of play when Purchase (5-6, 1-3 Skyline) hit four consecutive layups to grab the lead. The rest of the first period was a back and forth battle that saw eight more lead changes and two ties before both teams headed into the intermission with Hunter trailing by. four, 48-44.
The game remained close to start off the second half. After going up 60-59 from a free throw by
Joash Nyarko, the Hawks pushed the pace and with 12 minutes left to play another three from Reilly put Hunter up ten for the biggest lead of the game thus far. Purchase was able to come within three points four more times but Hunter continued to widen the gap each time, going up by as much as 13 at one point. Purchase's final attempt came in the final minute of play but with the Hawks shooting 76% from the line in the second period, they were too much for the home team to overcome and took home the win, 109-105.
Hunter's bench continued to impress, scoring 56 points in the win, led by
Devon Matthews who had 24 points and nine rebounds, falling just short of a double-double himself. Reilly followed with 17 points of his own including five threes
Jeremy Montrose and Ernie Parada also logged double-digit points, scoring 14 and 10, respectively.
The Hawks are set to return to the court after a break for the holidays on Dec. 28 at Cenentary University. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
